The Zone of Interest is a 2023 historical drama film written and directed by Jonathan Glazer, loosely based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Martin Amis. In 1943, Auschwitz Commandant Rudolf Höss lives with his wife Hedwig and their five children in an idyllic home next to the camp. Höss takes the children out to swim and fish, and Hedwig spends much of her time tending the garden. Servants handle chores around the house, while the prisoners’ belongings are given to the family. Beyond the garden wall, gunshots, shouting and sounds of trains and furnaces are constantly heard.

“The film is not just about a Nazi couple, or even just about the banality of evil. Rather, it is about the ways in which people close themselves off to destabilizing truths.”  — Boston Globe

“The scenario that Glazer creates and the performances of his lead players serve as a portal, challenging viewers to morph from spectators to participants, grappling with the enduring truth that we’re all capable of knowing evil when we see it..” — Washington Post
