Join us for a special screening of Stalking the Big Cat of Georgia, followed by a talk back with director Hal Jacobs and Jerry Grillo, author of Big Cat, a biography of Mize.
Johnny Mize was one of the greatest hitters in baseball’s golden age of great hitters. Born and raised in tiny Demorest, Georgia, in the northeast Georgia mountains, Mize emerged from the heart of Dixie as a Bunyonesque slugger. Mize became a ten-time All-Star, home run champion, and World Series hero, and after a 28-year wait, a Hall-of-Famer. This film goes behind the scenes to see what North Georgia author Jerry Grillo discovered about Mize while writing his 2024 biography.
Nicknamed “the Big Cat”, Johnny Mize terrorized major league pitchers for 15 seasons before becoming an invaluable pinch hitter for the World Series champion New York Yankees.
Hall-of-Famer Johnny “Big Cat” Mize from North Georgia was one of Major League Baseball’s top sluggers during its Golden Era. In the offseason, he barnstormed in the South versus top players from the segregated Negro Leagues.
