(Israel, drama, 85 min., unrated)

Asia (Israel, drama, 85 min., unrated) This award-winning drama, Israel’s official submission to the Academy Awards, concerns the prickly, changing relationship of Asia (Alena Yiv), a young Russian nurse in Israel, and her teenage daughter Vika (Shira Haas of Netflix’s Unorthodox), who suffers from a degenerative disease. “[Writer-director Ruthy] Pribar tells their story in unorthodox fashion—a fitting decision that yields immensely moving results. Asiais Pribar’s feature-length directorial debut, but it evinces an old hand’s confidence.” – Slant
