2:00 Screening: Loving Vincent

Directed by Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman

Loving Vincent (2017, UK-Poland, animation-biography, 94 minutes, rated PG-13) is the world’s first fully “painted” animated feature film. It explores the mystery of the last days of Vincent van Gogh’s life, using techniques that pay tribute to the painter’s distinctive vision.

“A truly awe-inspiring portrait of the great Dutch artist that boasts the distinction of being ‘the world’s first fully painted feature film.’ That means every one of the nearly 65,000 frames in this near-lunatic labor of love was rendered by hand with oil paints, following a style intended to mimic that of the master — which has precisely the effect you might imagine, pulling audiences into the delirious, hyper-sensual world suggested by van Gogh’s oeuvre.” – Peter Debruge, Variety

“Beyond explanation is the art itself. Animating Van Gogh’s bold impasto, already kinetic on the canvas, could have been merely superfluous. As moving pictures, though, the brushstrokes have an unexpected pull in this . . . deeply felt homage.” –  Sheri Linden, Los Angeles Times

3:45 – 5:00 Reception

Join us in celebrating the Macon Film Guild’s 25th Anniversary! The event will take place in the annex next to the Douglass Theatre lobby. Raise a glass with us as we honor our achievements and anticipate an exciting future.

5:00 Screening: Beasts of the Southern Wild

Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012, USA, Drama/Fantasy, 93 minutes, Rated PG-13 for thematic material including child imperilment, some disturbing images, language and brief sensuality) Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. In a forgotten but defiant bayou community cut off from the rest of the world by a sprawling levee, a six-year-old girl exists on the brink of orphanhood. Buoyed by her childish optimism and extraordinary imagination, she believes that the natural world is in balance with the universe until a fierce storm changes her reality. Desperate to repair the structure of her world in order to save her ailing father and sinking home, this tiny hero must learn to survive unstoppable catastrophes of epic proportions.

“Sometimes miraculous films come into being …blindsiding you with creative genius. “Beasts of the Southern Wild” is one of the year’s best films.” –  Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times.
